Reliance “in discussions” to acquire Disney+ Hotstar service
Speculation is rife that Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries is mulling the idea of acquiring Disney Star’s giant streaming business, Disney+ Hotstar.
Disney has been looking at various options including the complete sale of Star TV’s India operations – linear and digital. It has been under pressure after losing subscriber numbers on the back of losing IPL streaming rights. However, its linear service, Star Sports will continue broadcasting the tournament until 2027.
Recently, Reliance’s Viacom18 acquired the full media rights to broadcast India cricket’s home games. The loss has resulted in a gaping hole in Star Sports programming schedule.
