Release of Yash Raj Films’ ‘Maharaj’ on Netflix delayed due to legal dispute?

The highly anticipated release of Yash Raj Films’ period drama ‘Maharaj’ on Netflix, initially slated for Friday 14th June, has been postponed due to a legal dispute.

A Hindu group filed a petition, leading the Gujarat High Court to temporarily halt the film’s release. According to a report in Film Information, the petitioners, reportedly associated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, allege that the film portrays a 19th-century Hindu religious leader from Gujarat in a negative light, potentially hurting religious sentiments. This controversy comes amidst nearly ten days of growing tensions surrounding the film.

Gautam Ravriya, coordinator of the VHP-Bajrang Dal’s Konkan region, has been vocal on social media, posting videos of himself delivering a formal letter to Netflix and YRF officials in Mumbai. In the videos, Ravriya asserts that the VHP-Bajrang Dal will not permit the film’s release if they find any objectionable content.

‘Maharaj’ marks the debut of Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan.
