Ranveer Singh on ‘Padmaavat’: “I put my everything into it”

Ranveer Singh is receiving immense praise for his portrayal of Alauddin Khilji in ‘Padmaavat’ (2018) and the actor recently revealed all the hard work that went into doing justice to his role.

Finding inspiration for such a mentally, physically and emotionally draining role was not easy for Singh. “There’s no references (for the character) as such and it definitely didn’t come from within. I cannot really relate to Alauddin Khilji at any level. I am not as ambitious, as greedy and as manipulative. I’m not that kind of person at all. So for me, during the prep phase, I had to find this character. I did a lot of homework during my prep phase and there were many things I drew inspiration from and they were quite random. I have to say that the 21 days I locked myself for the prep of this film were extremely productive in building the foundation for the character.”, he told IANS.

The actor also discussed his initial hesitation about playing such a dark character. “It was a huge risk. I was very apprehensive about taking the risk but Bhansali was very persistent in his pursuit of me and he is the one who convinced me that I would be able to pull it off. I went with his conviction. I can never say no to Bhansali, given the amount he has contributed to my career and to me as an artiste. Once I committed, I put my everything into it. But, yes, initially there were apprehensions.”

Singh, who will be seen playing a rapper in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’, is hoping to accumulate a diverse body of work. “I have a very large vision for myself, my body of work, my career. I hope to build a vast legacy with a filmography which I can be proud of when I am done. I want to look back and feel like I made a significant contribution to the art and yes, keep pushing the envelope and keep exploring to things that have not been done before.”

‘Gully Boy’ is aiming to release in 2019.
