Ranveer Singh backs women’s squash tournament

Ranveer Singh 3

Ranveer Singh is a good sport. Reports say he will be backing the women’s final squash tournament, following a small request from his school friend Pia Bhattacharaya,a squash enthusiast, mentor to budding players and wife of five-time national squash champion, Ritwik Bhattacharya.

According to Pune Mirror, Bhattacharya got in touch with Singh as she felt it would do the team and the sport good to get a celebrity endorsement. Bhattacharya sent a text asking Singh tobe a part of a women۪s final match and felicitation program hosted by the Indian Squash Circuit (ISC).ʉWe went to school together. I۪ve known him for 14 years. I figured I۪d have to go through a certain number to people to get to him but Bollywood hasn۪t managed to change Ranveer,۝ said the squash mentor. As the saying goes afriend in need is a friend indeed couldn’t be more truer.

Ecstatic about Singh’s decision Bhattacharaya went on the say, Our squash players really need the publicity and Bollywood has a great influence on Indians. When a superstar endorses a sport, it changes the entire game. Ranveer is always helping friends, family, and is the kind of man who۪d walk out of his car to help someone on the street.۝

World Rank 10, Joshna Chinappa, and World Rank 19, Dipika Pallikal, were over the moon to hear the news too. It’s been saidRanveer who is as equally excited about the whole thing, will also play a friendly match with the young women.

The ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015) actor said, In a year when Indian female athletes have done the country proud at both the Olympics as well as the Para Olympics, I believe women squash players have it in them to be at the top. With some of the world۪s best players leading the way, I۪m sure there is a significant and untapped opportunity to generate interest and engagement of potential women players with this sport through such tournaments.”
