Ram Gopal Varma surprises with praise for Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’

Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham starrer ‘Pathaan’ (2023) has got cash registers ringing for Bollywood yet again. Many were writing off the superstardom of Khans. Others were speculating about the Hindi film industry facing the wrath of their successful southern counterparts. But it looks like Yash Raj Films’ latest blockbuster has shut the naysayers.

Ram Gopal Varma has spoken and like always it is not politically correct. Yet, it is something that will make the Hindi film industry cheer for the ‘Rangeela’ (1995) filmmaker. RGV brought to limelight all discussions of B-town’s detractors. The ‘Satya’ (1998) director crushed critics view and gave one of the best shoutouts for SRK’s ‘Pathaan’. Varma in his tweet declared – “MYTHS broken by PATHAN”.

Bollywood Films nor performing:

Many believed that growing popularity of southern superstars was a key reason for Bollywood failing to perform at the box office. Other attributed to lack of good stories and disconnect between the movies and audience. There was also the OTT versus movie theatre watching experience. And of course, post pandemic affects that reduced footfall in cinema halls. In fact, everyone from Karan Johar to Anurag Kashyap, Ranbir Kapoor to Kajol have spoken about this at various points.

Kajol had in fact said, “It’s just a phase and our films will soon bounce back strongly. We, as an industry, are working on it, changing gears, and figuring out the way forward at individual levels. I’m sure the individual energies and efforts will combine and put our industry back on track”.

Looks like Deepika Padukone, SRK and John Abraham starrer has kicked off celebrations for the Hindi film fraternity. And while there will be comparisons between Tollywood and Bollywood, we certainly think that King Khan has confirmed RGV’s statement about not being a “fading star”.
