Rajkumar Hirani set to helm ‘3 Idiots’ sequel with original cast
Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is preparing to helm a sequel to the 2009 blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’, reuniting the original cast for a new chapter in the much‑loved story.
The project will be directed by Hirani, with Vidhu Vinod Chopra producing alongside Hirani and Aamir Khan. According to sources close to the production, filming is expected to commence in the latter half of 2026. “The script has been finalised, and the team is thrilled. They believe the magic of the first film has returned — it is just as humorous, heartfelt and meaningful as the original,” an insider confirmed.
The narrative will continue nearly fifteen years after the characters parted ways in the climax of the first film, bringing Rancho, Farhan, Raju and Pia back together for a fresh adventure. Audiences can expect the familiar warmth and wit of the original, now enriched by the maturity of their grown‑up lives.

Hirani always had the seed of a concept for ‘3 Idiots 2’, but he wanted it to be perfect, something worthy of the legacy of the original,” the source explained.
