Rahul Kanwal to leave India Today Group after 22 years

Veteran journalist Rahul Kanwal is set to depart from the India Today Group after an illustrious 22-year tenure.

Kanwal currently serves as News Director of TVTN and Executive Director of Business Today. Throughout his career, he has been a key figure at both India Today and Aaj Tak, both of which operate under the India Today Group umbrella.

In an internal communication to staff, Kalli Purie, Vice Chairperson of the India Today Group, paid tribute to Kanwal’s legacy, describing his career as “the quintessential India Today Group narrative—an extraordinary journey of organic growth, limitless opportunities, and a meteoric rise that benefited both sides.”

Over the past twelve years, Kanwal has played an instrumental role in building high-performing editorial teams and shaping impactful journalistic content, earning widespread recognition both within the organisation and across the industry. Under his leadership, the newsroom emerged as one of the most dynamic and respected in the Indian media landscape.

“Change is never easy, but it is the lifeblood of news,” Purie noted, hinting at new chapters for both Kanwal and the organisation. “He has mentored a strong second line, which is locked and loaded for what comes next. It’s now your turn to shine.”

It remains unclear where Kanwal will be heading next.
