Priyanka Chopra regrets endorsing fairness creams

Priyanka Chopra is now a huge star in both Bollywood and the West. However, in a recent interview she’s talked about how much being taunted that she wasn’t “fair” affected her in her childhood and teenage years. She also spoke about regretting taking on endorsements for fairness creams.

“I got swayed into doing it…but then I realised it made me feel like I did as a kid I used to try all those products until I became Miss India,” the actress told The Guardian.

When asked whether she wished she had lighter skin, Chopra nods and replies, “It really works on your psyche, man. We don۪t realise it, but it does. I was the darkest, so in jest my family called me kaali [black girl], and I never really understood how much that affected me until I was a teenager”.

Chopra also spoke about facing racism in the US, “My song replaced one from Faith Hill, who is like the all-American girl and suddenly there was this brown girl and the NFL got so many emails from fans saying: Who is this Arab terrorist?۪ I got so much of it, too”.

She also gave her thoughts about the diversity row that faces the Oscars, in which she will be the only Indian to present an award this year, “I am too new in this industry to be taking extreme decisions like that. When it comes to India I am very vocal about how I feel, but I am just six months old here, and honestly I want to go and see what will happen at the Oscars, especially as there is such a huge debate. I think it will be a very interesting evening”.
