Plea for suspension of ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ trailer rejected by Delhi High Court

A petition that was lodged against the filmmakers of ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, asking for the trailer to be suspended, has been refused by Delhi High Court.

Reported on TNIE, at a recent hearing Pooja Mahajan who filed the plea on a non-personal basis, says that the Cinematography Act was being misused and alleged the trailer release defamed the Constitutional post of the prime minister. However the Delhi High Court have said for Mahajan to file her plea under Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

“The counsel for respondents state that the petition is in the nature of public interest and it be filed as a PIL,” said the court.

Mahajan claims that the disclaimers on the trailer were completely different and any actor playing the role of an ex-prime minister was a punishable offence, saying “Real facts are totally different. In fact, the disclaimer given in the trailer is untrue, false and fake. “By performing the character of Manmohan Singh (ex-PM), Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, the performing actors/artists have committed offences punishable under sections 416 (cheating by impersonation) of the IPC and therefore, the CBFC could not have given the certificate for screening/exhibition of the film.”

Anupam Kher who has transformed himself to play India’s ex-prime minister Manmohan Singh, is based on the self-titled book ‘Manmohan Singh’ by Sanjaya Baru, the former prime minister’s media advisor. The trailer releases on the 11th January.
