The initial figures of the lucrative Indian Premier League 2014 (IPL) tournament has had a slower start than the last two years in the UK ratings.

According to overnight data from Attentional, IPL 2014 launch show and opening match on Wednesday (16th April) pulled in 178,900 viewers (total viewing including +1) – peaking at 322,800 viewers.

Last year, during the same period, IPL delivered 240,200 viewers.

In 2012, the opening game pulled in 233,700 viewers.

The second day’s coverage on Thursday, ITV4 attracted a much more respectable 228,900 viewers – peaking at 383,700 viewers.

No doubt, the industry will be keeping a close eye on the ratings for this year’s tournament as this will be the final time the IPL will be broadcast on UK terrestrial television. Next year, IPL’s coverage moves to Sky Sports.

Above data is an overnight rating and may change slightly after consolidated figures become available in seven days from BARB.
