The much anticipated premiere of Sushant Singh Rajput’s swansong ‘Dil Bechara’ created quite a storm on Friday, when it streamed simultaneously in India, UK, USA and Canada.
In estimated figures released by Ormax Media, a viewership tracking and consulting firm, a humongous 95 million viewers logged on to Disney+ Hotstar in India within the first 24 hours of its release. Unsurprisingly, the film has beaten any other film premiere online.
Talking to Mid-Day, Gautam Jain, reiterated the opening was absolutely huge but numbers were estimated. He said, “If one wants to, comparisons could be drawn [between the viewership] of Dil Bechara, and that of [the much-acclaimed series] Game of Thrones, and this was possible even though the latter had a pre-existing viewer-base, while the film [did not]. Then again, Hotstar promoted Dil Bechara from the onset, marketing its release date and time well in advance. Viewers showed up in unison to watch it.”
The cinema release of ‘Dil Bechara’ was deferred from its initial November 2019 date to May 2020. However, due to coronavirus and shutdown of cinemas, makers decided to release ‘Dil Bechara’ exclusively on Hotstar.
