It is hard to think that it has been one year since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani۪ came onto our screens and gave a fresh perspective on love and friendships in the world of Bollywood. This film did so well at the box office, providing a smash hit and winning awards for the actors and the soundtrack. After a four year gap, Deepika Padukone and her ex Ranbir Kapoor were bought back together in this film, creating hype around this film even before its release. Directed by one of Bollywood۪s promising young directors Ayan Mukerji, who also has the likes of Wake up Sid۪ (2009) under his belt, this film had great expectations and it lived up to each one.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani۪ tells the story of a group of friends as they navigate through two big moments in their life, new found adulthood and then later on marriage and relationships. Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone) is an insecure girl who is living her life in the world of books, following her parent۪s chosen career path of becoming a doctor and never questioning the decisions made for her. She bumps into wild child and school friend Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) who informs her that she is off for a trekking trip with their mutual friends Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) and Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur). On a spur of a moment decision, Naina decides to join them on their trip and discovers that there is more to life than books and begins to fall for Bunny on the snowy slopes of Kashmir.

Though this film is a love story which is nothing new for Bollywood, Mukerji tells the story with fresh characters and a refreshing fun loving attitude. All the characters have some way of identifying with the audience and reminding them of their teenage years. The narrative of this film was easy and seamless with key scenes scripted so beautifully by Hussain Dalal that it was hard to believe these characters were not friends off screen in real life. Since the likes of Yash Chopra۪s blockbusters, it had been a while before this film that there were scenes that would be remembered well after the film۪s release, but this film has that appeal. The film۪s backdrop also helped set this charming love story with the use of Rajasthan, Paris and Kashmir, equally beautiful places complimenting the storyline.

The film conveyed the emotions of each of the characters incredibly well. From the stubborn and ambitious fun loving Bunny to the shy and reserved Naina, this film bought those characters to life and even made it easy to love and hate them all at the same time. What was truly remarkable about this film was that the supporting cast, Koechlin and Kapur were both given equally important roles in the film and they played off the main characters incredibly well.

The soundtrack of the film by Pritam acted as the icing on the cake for this film with numbers that are still being played on the radio and at weddings, even till this day. On screen, these songs were pictured beautifully with some incredibly well directed numbers. Madhuri Dixit- Nene was bought back onto the screen with a bang with Gaghra being a part of the introductory scene for mischievous Bunny. Special mention also has to go to the number Balam Pichkari which a grand colourful Holi scene, it had the audience dancing in their seats and wanting more.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani۪ is a film which takes its audience on a journey, full of happy and sad moments but one which remind you of what life really should be about, love and friendship.

BizAsia wishes the team of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani۪ a very happy first birthday.
