‘Mary Kom’ (2014) has won accolades from all corners of the world, as many applauded Priyanka Chopra in her portrayal of the leading Indian women boxer, but the film wouldn’t have been conceptualized without the vision of debutant director, Omung Kumar. Kumar is on could nine as ‘Mary Kom’ has won an National Award for the ‘Best Popular Film.’

Kumar couldn’t figure out if the film had actually won an award or not, and is in Malaysia, as celebrations start. The TOI quoted Kumar in an message given to the IANS, “Winning an National Award for my first film is the biggest high I could have got. God, I can’t believe it. I’m sitting in Malaysia right now and getting to know this news from people, and I couldn’t understand first as to did we get nominated or did we win, and then finally when I came to know it really happened, I just couldn’t believe it. It’s a dream come true for a debut director. Thank you for all your support.”

Kumar has also been one of the popular art directors of Bollywood and television, having created many film sets like ‘Saawariya’ (2007) and the ‘Zee Rishtey Awards 2014’ (Zee TV-2014). ‘Mary Kom’ also starred the talented Darshan Kumar as Onler Kom, Mary’s husband.
