Nusrat Ghani elected first ethnic minority Deputy Speaker for UK parliament
Nusrat Ghani, Conservative MP for Sussex Weald, has been elected to the post of Deputy Speaker, marking the first time this position has been held by an ethnic minority.
The principal Deputy Speaker is the Chairman of Ways and Means, who is elected from the opposite side of the House to the Speaker.
Ghani has previously held ministerial positions in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, as well as the Department for Business and Trade.
House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle expressed his delight at the historic nature of the appointments, noting that for the first time ever, he has an all-female and the most diverse line-up of Deputy Speakers.
