NTV rapped by Ofcom for exceeding commercial airtime

NTV has been rapped by Ofcom for exceeding advertising minutage on 27 occasions in December 2023.

During routine monitoring, Ofcom identified 27 instances across a 24 day period when the amount
of advertising broadcast in a clock hour contained more than the permitted allowance. The duration of excess advertising broadcast in these clock hours ranged from 15 seconds to five minutes.

The broadcaster acknowledged that there were occasions when the permitted advertising limit was exceeded. It said that the majority of incidents were owing to the duration of live programming broadcast across subsequent clock hours. It explained that when these programmes did not run to the planned schedule, it had a cumulative effect on the timing of the advertising breaks and that this resulted in some advertising being broadcast in a different clock hour than intended.

Ofcom found NTV in breach of its rules and said it will continue to monitor the Licensee’s compliance with COSTA.
