Sonam Kapoor starrer ‘Neerja’ (2016) has been banned for release in Pakistan, as it has been accused of portraying the country in a negative manner.

Based on a true story of how Neerja Bhanot risked her life to save passengers when a Pan Am flight to Karachi was hijacked in 1986.NDTV reported a member from Pakistani distribution company IMGC stating, “The ministry issued us a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to import the film and bring it to Pakistani territory, but later on revoked the NOC.”

Mobasher Hasan, head ofthe Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC), was also reported explaining that it was the information and commerce ministry who made the decision to not have the film shown in the country. “The film was never brought to us for censorship,” he said.

Hasan went onto add that thePakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (PEMRA) were also contacted to ensure that the film was not to broadcast on television channels across the country either.

Directed by Ram Madhvani, ‘Neerja’ also stars Shabana Azmi.
