Ofcom has rapped NDTV 24×7 for a sponsorship breach during May this year.

The channel was rapped for channel sponsorship and the assembly elections ‘And..The Winner Is..” programme sponsorship, which is prohibited in UK.

NDTV confirmed that the sponsorship credits were broadcast at the points highlighted by Ofcom and apologised for these errors. NDTV said the principle of Rule 9.15 was well understood and therefore while the service is created for broadcast in India, a clean feed is usually delivered to the UK for broadcast here. However, due to human error, the channel and programme sponsorship credits were included in the UK feed.

Ofcom noted NDTV had confirmed that the channel consisted of news, review and debate on current issues. Ofcom also noted that the programme in question provided special coverage۝ of the assembly elections in India and analysis of the results as successful candidates were announced. Given the coverage, debate and analysis of issues that were clearly of national and international concern, Ofcom considered the programme constituted a current affairs programme under the Code.

Ofcom noted the compliance measures taken by NDTV once it became aware of Ofcom۪s investigation; however, the sponsorship of the assembly elections breached Rule 9.15.
