Music Review: ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’

Multi-talented model-screenplay writer-actor-director Punit Malhotra is back with a new project after I Hate Luv Storys۪ (2010). Titled Gori Tere Pyaar Mein۪, Malhotra has the Karan Johar production mettle behind him yet again along with a bigger female lead in the form of Kareena Kapoor compared to his last project. Shraddha Kapoor, daughter of Shakti Kapoor also stars in a pivotal role post her last appearance in Aashiqui 2۪ (2013). Overall Punit Malhotra is taking a failed on screen pair of Imran Khan & Kareena Kapoor after last years Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu۪ (2012) and trying to create a 2013 hit in which music would surely play a major role. No one better than the Vishal-Shekhar duo to create that magic for the ears! With only one super massive hit in the form of Chennai Express۪ (2013) behind them this year, there would a lot riding on Gori Tere Pyaar Mein۪ for them as well and thus creates really high expectations from the film.

Starting off with Dhat Teri Ki in the voices of Sanam Puri and Aditi Singh Sharma is a song that will take all airwaves and convert them to cool storms with its cool quotient with strong musical brilliance undercurrents. It is rare to find anyone better than Vishal-Shekhar to deliver a song like this better than them. The composition is genius with some excellent bass guitar throughout with lead guitar and keyboard solos. Most prominent is the discovery and perfect vocals of newbie Sanam Puri with only ‘Ishq Actually’ (2013) behind him. This man has some serious potential! Lyrics by Kumaar are faultless and will make song a college anthem across and get some serious plays from DJs at the end of parties saying “Main Ghar nahi Jana“. Awesome song!

Beginning with the voice one of my favourite female singers Shalmali Kholgade with the super icing of Shankar Mahadevan, Chingam Chabake is a piece of exiting item number to the level of Halkat Jawani from ‘Heroine’ (2012). Shalmali has this soft sexy texture to her voice that makes her songs feel magical at points with Shankar doing the same on the male vocals along with delivering the energy required for an item number like this. The fullness of the music with a massive ensemble keeps the beats ticking. Folk specialist lyricists Anvita Dutt and Kausar Munir along with Kumaar bring in the rural touch with Gujarati lyrics making this song a hit across cultures. Watch this song scale the charts as the wedding kicks off and high TV and radio play as well. A total masala hit!

Tooh is another pure party tune and perfect for the wedding fiascos. This is a song that has class and is for the masses and will have equal success on air and the clubs. In the voices of Mika Singh, Mamta Sharma, Shruti Pathak and Vishal himself, it is a proper ensemble of the best voices that have the energy to deliver this dancefloor burner that has been perfectly created by the best guys to do such a song in the Bollywood industry. Lyrics by Anvita Dutt on this song are folkish but with a modern touch that gives it a different vibe all together. This is a sure shot hit and well deserved!

Naina in the voice of Kamal Khan and Neeti Mohan is a mature love song composed beautifully to the Hindustani classical music style with Indian instrumentation and with soulful lyrics by Kausar Munir. Khan delivers almost to the standard of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan whilst Neeti Mohan makes a mark for herself delivering very clean mesmerising vocals. The deeply romantic lyrics romanticise eyes with some of the best comparisons. Vishal-Shekhar keep the music simple but yet again deliver a brilliant composition overall. Will this song scale the charts is something to wait and watch.

Lyrics by Kausar Munir of Dil Duffer along with the vocals of Nitesh Kadam and Shruti Pathak make this song a very simple romantic song which is fresh and very young in its appeal. It depicts the little excitement and fondness of brand new love in a very listenable way. Musically very urban and modern with acoustic guitars and finger clicks makes this song yet another tune for the college kids on a romantic drive.

Sukhwinder Singh does his magic on this part Gujarati number called Moto Ghotalo along with Sanah Moidutty. Apart from Sukhwinder’s awesome vocals that are really strong classically the other thing that really stands out is the arrangement of the song by Vishal-Shekhar. The variations in the rustic fun melody of this song are carefully put together by the duo. Lyrics by the threesome Anvita Dutt, Kausar Munir and Kumaar talk about the fun classic confusions and hardships of a love chase for a guy. Decently good number.

Dhat Teri Ki (Remix) is not too bad on the ears at all as DJ Rishabh respects the original composition and keeps it simple but still showing his capability in creating those additional beats and vocal scratches. It will still struggle to find its own place compared to the original but good job on this remix DJ Rishabh.

Chingam Chabake (Remix) is a total techno disaster by DJ Kiran Kamari. The Jamaican beats with some absurd keyboard synths kill the party feel that the original already has. The brilliance of an original Vishal-Shekhar desi item number composition is that it has so many twists and turns that a techno number cannot handle.

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein Mashup by DJ Kiran Kamath is a great job by the DJ in putting all the songs under one danceable mashup that does equal justice to all the party numbers on this album. Not bad at all!

With the soundtrack of Gori Tere Pyaar Mein۪, Vishal-Shekar outdo their own work creating Bollywood۪s biggest hit with the music of Chennai Express۪ earlier this year. Every song on this nine track album is worth listening to and destined for commercial success. It is difficult for any music director to deliver a hit on every track but Vishal-Shekhar prove they can do that after dedicated work on this album all year long. The guys are simply genius as they not only get their music and sound right but also their team of lyricists and singers are perfect to the T for what is required in the song! With two massive party numbers Tooh and Chingam Chabake, end of 2013 is going to be all about the music of Gori Tere Pyaar Mein۪. Dhat Teri Ki and Dil Duffer will appeal very strongly to the young uni crowd while Naina is perfect to make anyone fall in love. Singer Sanam Puri clearly stands out and marks his entry. This album is worth buying and Bollywood lovers need to try and hold on to your seats when listening to it because Vishal-Shekhar just won۪t let you sit! This is an all-out get up and dance fun soundtrack and defines the sound of 2013.
