Movie Review: ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi’

'Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi'

Having seen the trailers for this film, one isn’t sure what to expect. Starring unconventional leads, Boman Irani and Farah Khan, it was hard to work out how the two would fare as the lead actors in the film. Irani is famous for his comedies whilst for Khan, it is clear that she is better known as a director and choreographer, not an actress. Farah Khan۪s casting as the lead was hugely backed by Irani۪s wife, Boman Irani told Daily News: I said it’s (casting Farah) a great idea. I went home and told Zenobia (Boman’s wife) and she said ‘What a fantastic idea! Boman, if this is the casting, you must do this film just because of the casting.۝ Famous friend of Khan is Shah Rukh Khan who brought some superstar presence to the launch of this film and it was hyped to be the most unusual love story for Bollywood yet.

Boman Irani stars as Parsi boy۪ Farhad who is at the behest of his over-bearing mother who is keen to see her 45-year-old son happily married and settled down. His family is keen on him carrying on the generation and keep encouraging him to attend Parsi matrimonial socials to find a suitablebride. The thing that keeps getting in the way is the fact he is working in a lingerie shop as a salesman and his unique talent is that he can tell a girl۪s size just by looking at her. This is whereShirin (Farah Khan) comes inand he loses his heart to her. In the meantime, Farhad۪s mother is in dispute with Shirin because she is the secretary of the Parsi Trust and is trying to get Farhad۪s mum to remove an illegal water tank in her home. When Shirin is bought home to meet the family, the true drama begins as Farhad۪s mum views Shirin as the enemy and refuses the idea that the two would marry.

The plot to this film is not something new or revealing at all with families in dispute about two lovers being together. However the thing that makes the film such an interesting watch is the two leads. The two actors do share a common chemistry and play off each other with their little in jokes and one liners. Irani is at his comedic best playing a very endearing bachelor who is nave to the world in many ways. Khan۪s acting debut is commendable because she is playing a character that is an extension of her own personality. She handles each scene effortlessly and knows exactly what is required of her in each shot, showing her immense familiarity of the film business both in front and behind the character.

The music score for this film is just as off-beat as the film is but fits the storyline well. Ramba Mein Samba and Ishq Main Tere Bina are two songs that do stick in your mind long after the film has finished. Credit has to be given to the cinematography for this film as the Parsi community and lifestyle is replicated so well and it is clear that a lot of research has gone into it. If you are familiar with the community, you will know a lot of characters in real life.

You have to take this film as what you see is what you get. It is unlikely to battle the likes of big commercial films like Ek Tha Tiger۪ (2012) at the box office but it is quaint and an unusual love story that will make you sigh in contentment.
