Middlesborough Mela postponed due to UK riots

The much-anticipated Middlesborough Mela, originally scheduled for Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August 2024, has been postponed until further notice. The decision comes in light of the recent riots that have erupted across various cities in England, raising concerns over safety and security.

The organisers of the Mela shared the news on Instagram, expressing their regret over the postponement and underscoring their commitment to the safety and well-being of attendees. The statement read:

“Dear Mela Community,

The Middlesbrough Mela is a cherished festival that, for the past 33 years, has brought together people from various cultures, races, and religions to celebrate unity, positive integration, and togetherness. It is a time for friends and families to come together, enjoy vibrant performances, delicious food, and a range of activities in a joyful and safe environment.

We always prioritise the safety and well-being of our attendees at the Mela and we strive to create a secure space where everybody can relax and enjoy themselves without any concerns or feelings of anxiety.

Unfortunately, this stability has been shaken lately due to the deplorable violence, criminality, and unrest we have witnessed unfold in many of our towns and cities.

Due to this volatile climate and degree of uncertainty, we believe it is prudent to postpone this year’s festival in order to safeguard the public. This decision has been a very difficult one but it allows us time to make more vigorous risk assessments and ensure that we can deliver this event safely for all our communities.

We will be working closely with our partners and stakeholders to determine the most appropriate course of action of when to reschedule the festival. We are committed to providing updates and will announce the new date as soon as we have completed our assessments.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding during these testing times.

Please stay safe and remain vigilant.”
