Mayor of London Sadiq Khan knighted at Buckingham Palace
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has officially been knighted by King Charles III in a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace. He received the honour in recognition of his political and public service, as outlined in the New Year Honours list.
During the traditional investiture, Sadiq Khan knelt as King Charles touched him on the shoulder with a sword, formally conferring the title of “Sir.”
Sir Sadiq Khan, who was re-elected for a third term as mayor in May 2024, becomes the first person to hold the office of Mayor of London to be knighted. Speaking after the ceremony, he said he was “truly humbled” by the honour and shared that he had joked with the King about which of them worked harder, to which the monarch reportedly responded warmly.
