MATV rapped by Ofcom for reference of commercial brand during news

MATV has been reprimanded by Ofcom for prominently displaying a commercial brand during a news bulletin.

The programme in question, ‘Aaj Ka Samachar,’ which focuses on Indian news, was flagged for including a visible reference to the company Wonder Cement.

The issue arose as the newsreader’s laptop, visible throughout the broadcast, displayed the Wonder Cement logo and name on its back. While there were no verbal references to the brand, its presence raised concerns about compliance with broadcasting standards.

MATV clarified that the programme is produced by the Indian broadcaster Doordarshan and that it is not directly involved in the production.

However, Ofcom noted that the visible display of the company’s name and logo lacked editorial justification. The regulator concluded that this constituted a breach of Rule 9.5 of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code, which prohibits undue prominence of commercial references in programmes.
