MATV acquires Sahara One shows

Leicester based MATV, broadcast on Channel 6 in the East Midlands and nationally on Sky Digital has spruced up its programming by acquiring new shows from India’s Sahara One.

MATV will telecast four of Sahara One’s much talked about shows such as ‘Malini Iyer’, which saw the TV debut of Bollywood favourite Sridevi.

Also as part of the line-up, the popular ‘Karishma-The Miracles Of Destiny’ starring Karisma Kapoor and numerous other Bollywood stars.

Hema Malini’s new drama in which she plays a double role – ‘Kamini Damini’ will also be shown on the channel. Finally, the recent debut of comedian Paresh Rawal on the small screen in the form of ‘Shubh Mangal Savdhan’ will also air.

Karishma-The Miracles Of Destiny (264 episodes)
Monday – Tuesday at 21:00
Kamini Damini (52 episodes)
Wednesday at 21:00
Shubh Mangal Savdhan(54 episodes)
Thursday at 21:00
Malini Iyer (104 episodes)
Friday at 21:00

The shows of which the rights have been in the air for the past year and a half were initially expected to be shown on ZEE. However, a last minute change in decision resulted in the network not showing the programmes at all. Similarly ATN Global (now Venus TV) had made much fanfare about the acquisition of the same shows but the channel went bust and new owners Venus TV decided against showing them.

So while, ZEE, STAR and Sony jazz up their own 21:00 time band with soaps, MATV is heavily depending on its new properties. However, with the programmes proving a dud on Indian television, will British audiences welcome the shows with open arms? Only time will tell. One thing’s for sure, the new shows have certainly put MATV back on the map.
