Mani Kohli founder of Khubsoorat Collection honoured in King’s New Year List
Mani Kohli, founder of Khubsoorat Collection, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours for services to fashion.
This recognition marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first South Asian female fashion designer to receive an MBE in this category.
Arriving in the UK in the late 1970s as a young bride, Kohli faced significant challenges, including a broken marriage and raising two children as a single mother. Despite systemic barriers and social exclusion during a period of heightened racism, she rebuilt her life and pursued a career rooted in independence and creativity.
Her fashion journey began in 1977, when representation for South Asian female designers was rare. A pivotal moment came with her involvement in a major Indian fashion show organised by the India High Commission, attended by over 52,000 people. Support from veteran designer Zandra Rhodes led to Kohli exhibiting at the London Textile Museum.
In 1985, Kohli launched Khubsoorat Collection, identifying a gap in the market for contemporary South Asian womenswear that blended heritage with modern sensibilities. Starting with a mobile wholesale business, she opened her first boutique in East London during a period of economic recession. Over four decades, Khubsoorat Collection grew into a leading brand with stores in London and New York, known for empowering women and integrating South Asian fashion into British culture. Her designs have featured in film and pop culture, including the acclaimed movie Bend It Like Beckham.
Reflecting on the honour, Mani Kohli said: “Looking back on nearly 48 years in London, receiving the MBE feels deeply humbling. My journey began in adversity, but it was shaped by resilience, community and belief. This recognition reflects not just my story, but the many people and communities who walked alongside me.”
