Madhu Chopra opens up about Priyanka’s early days in film industry & being asked for private narration
Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ mother, Madhu Chopra, recently opened up about her daughter’s early days in the film industry, recalling the challenges Priyanka faced and how she stood up for herself in difficult situations.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Madhu shared, “In the early days of her career, I used to sit on sets like a ‘daayan’ (witch). Priyanka was very young and came from a very protective environment. We were outsiders and had heard the industry could be a tough place. She is our only daughter, so we didn’t want to take any chances.”
Madhu also recalled a particular instance when Priyanka demonstrated her strength and decisiveness. She revealed, “I never faced a difficult situation; Priyanka would always make the decisions. Once, a director told her he would give her a private narration and asked me to leave. She walked out and refused to do the film, saying, ‘If you can’t narrate in front of my mother, do you think I’ll do the film? No, I won’t.’ She was always very decisive, never afraid of losing a role, and always had a backup plan. She carved her own path and confidently walked on it.”

Reflecting on the lessons she imparted to her daughter, Madhu concluded, “I always told her, if you behave like a ‘chawanni’ (25 cents), people will treat you that way. Make yourself a ‘rupee,’ and people will value you and not treat you like trash.”
