London’s BFI Southbank boasts sold-out ‘DDLJ’ screening

On 7th November, the British Film Institute (BFI) Southbank in London screened the record-breaking Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, directed by Aditya Chopra, which marked 20 years since release last month. The much-loved film was screened as part of the BFI’s Love Season, in partnership with Plusnet, and gave a one-off chance to British fans to relive the film on the big screen once again in their own city – a city which plays it’s own part in the narrative of the film.

Raj & Pablo were hosting the event which began with a dance tribute to producers Yash Raj Films (YRF) by dance group Absolute Bollywood. Following on from this, Navraj Panesar, General Manager, YRF International, madean announcement of the winners of the real-life Raj and Simran competition held by B4U.

Khan himself sent a video message for the winners in which he said, “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has had a huge impact on my life because I wasn’t sure whether I should do a romantic film. I didn’t know if I looked like a romantic hero. Yashji and Adi convinced me that if I do this then it’d be good for me. Thank you very much Yashji, thank you Adi, thank you Kajol… thank you everyone… I hope that for many years, when we talk about DDLJ, I hope it affects everyone’s lives who fall in love again and again.”

The atmosphere during the screening was hugely memorable. Many whistled through Khan’s entry scenes during the first and the second half – and also during the climax scene at the end when Khan is seen defying all odds and single-handedly emerging to fight back against those violently attacking him. When approaching the last scenes, Kajol is seen getting on the train with Khan helping her jump on, and the audience clapped and cheered once again.

There is not a more fitting tribute to the film which was filmed in the British capital than to have this screening by the BFI to mark its 20th anniversary and we’re sure Bollywood fans would agree that this was a memorable afternoon.
