Leicester’s Haymarket Theatre goes into liquidation

Leicester’s Haymarket Theatre has fallen into liquidation due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The venue, which has homed a number of Asian events including ‘Mrs Kapoor’s Daughter’s Wedding’, underwent a £3 million renovation in 2018. It will now hand the lease back to Leicester City Council, which owns the building.

A statement published in the Leicester Mercury said, “Having gone through the tricky first two years for any start-up business, and despite hoping to enter our first profitable year, the current financial outlook is bleak given that the pandemic has effectively switched off our income tap.

“It now seems likely that venues such as Haymarket will have to remain closed for a considerable time and audience demand will likely remain subdued for some time thereafter.

“Having not had the time to build the significant reserves required, we are unable to continue.”
