Leicester welcomes community Asian station

A new community Asian radio station has launched in Leicester, providing a mix of Punjabi orientated programming.

The station called Kohinoor FM Radio is available on 97.3FM and will broadcast for an initial five-years.

Kohinoor FM’s launch on Sunday 1st February was marked with the presence of Lord Mayor Manjula Sood, Bhangra legend Malkit Singh MBE and individuals from various businesses in the Midlands region.

Commercial rival Sabras Radio in Leicester is likely to feel a pinch with Kohinoor FM’s launch. Recently, another community station, Raaj FM, went live in the Sandwell area of Birmingham to give Radio XL in the same region competition. Incidentally Raaj FM also specialises in Punjabi shows.

Furthermore, London-based community station Asian Star Radio launched on Sky Digital this week. The station broadcasts on FM in Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead and parts of the Heathrow area.
