As thousands of women across the globe set to perform the Karva Chauth ritual for the health and wellbeing of their husbands, Bollywood has always managed to create wonderful sequences depicting this festival, being an ultimate showcase of the love that is shared between couples. Through this, many film-makers decided to have their heroes and heroines perform the act even before their characters said I do, as a part of showing how committed they are to each other.
BizAsiaLive.com shares five films that celebrate Karva Chauth, before they lived happily ever after, to mark the occasion on 4th November.
‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ (1994)
Unlike many other films, instead of the Karva Chauth pooja being reflected, Sooraj Barjatya decided to use this celebration as an excuse to have all of his main characters perform a song and dance. Being convinced to stay another night at his daughter’s house Siddharth Chaudhury (Anupam Kher) declares that the night of Karva Chauth has to be celebrated with song and dance. With the whole family playing the game of musical cushion, where each person has to perform an act when the music stops, Nisha (Madhuri Dixit Nene) is requested by Prem (Salman Khan) to sing an original song. From the start of Maye Ni Maye the two constantly exchange winks, flirty glances and dreamy eyes towards each other, making their feelings grow even stronger as the night goes on.
‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995)
Probably one of the most iconic scenes reflecting Karva Chauth ever to be made in the history of Indian cinema. After Simran (Kajol) explains to Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) the meaning of Karva Chauth, he goes about the day as if none of it matters until she pretends to faint and waits for him on her balcony. After turning up late, Simran refuses to eat the food Raj offers her when Chutki (Pooja Ruparel) reveals how Raj hasn’t eaten all day either and did the same fast for Simran as she did for him. Upon hearing this the couple spend the rest of the evening feeding each other from the same plate. And who can forget the adorable scene when Raj announces that the moon comes out and points to the mirror to show Simran it’s her.
‘Yes Boss’ (1997)
Another wonderful sequence representing Karva Chauth comes in an unusual way with ‘Yes Boss’. Pretending to be married to Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), Seema (Juhi Chawla) promises to fast for him to his mother. When she arrives late from being with Siddharth (Aditya Pancholi), Rahul is quick to tell her off claiming she was probably eating at a fancy hotel. When finding out what she’s really done, he quietly allows her to perform the ritual, looks into her soft brown eyes and apologises. As Seema accepts his apology, she playful places the sieve on his head, where despite knowing it, it’s evident she is in fact falling for him too.
‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001)
Everyone remembers the beautiful sequence between Anjali (Kajol) and Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) during the song Bole Chudiyan. However, Karan Johar was sure to also put on a few laughs for his audience, especially when it came to Pooja aka Poo (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan). Already realising their love for each other Pooja expressed how she has fasted for the day. Teasing her Rohan confusingly asks “For who?”. As they flirt with each other, Pooja dares Rohan to speak his truth about being Rahul’s (Khan) brother in order for her to declare her love for him. Taking her challenge on Rohan sings Waha Waha Ramji from ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ as a way of being playful about the situation, to which Pooja has no choice but to take up her part of the deal.
‘Ishq Vishk’ (2003)
Already declaring their love for each other Payal (Amrita Rao) is the perfect good Indian girl, who holds many religious celebrations close to her heart. As the women in her family perform the Karva Chauth pooja she goes along and imagines Rajiv (Shahid Kapoor) standing there with her. Realising she is just daydreaming she enters her room with her aarti plate, where Rajiv is in-fact waiting for her. Becoming very exciting he participates in the ritual and even makes a playing joke as she touches his feet. Upon declaring how important this is for her, Rajiv looks at her with the utmost understanding with his eyes full of love and admiration.
BizAsiaLive.com wishes all the happy couples around the world a very happy Karva Chauth.
