Almost two decades on since its release, Karan Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998) is still loved and celebrated by fans across the globe. However, the filmmaker himself looks back at his first film as one with an “unusually silly theme”.

Deccan Chronicle quote Johar as having said at a recent event, “Actually, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ is a very unusually silly theme. Don’t know what the mother wrote in those eight letters, how can a eight-year-old read that? But it was done with so much conviction, a mother has left eight letters, but kya likha hoga pehli, dusri chhitti may ki woh bachcha padh sake? _He (the hero) says, ‘Zindagi may pyaar ek bar hota hai, shaadi ek bar hoti hai‘, but he himself has fallen in love twice, got married twice. Everything was wrong, but it was written with so much conviction that it made sense.”

Johar went on to add that his first film had an “organic innocence”, which he wouldn’t be able to replicate anymore.

The filmmaker has returned to the director’s seat for the sixth time with ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, which releases later this month forDiwali.
