Kanshi Radio fined £17.5k by Ofcom

Kanshi Radio has been fined £17,500 by Ofcom for failing to provide adequate protection for listeners, after it aired potentially offensive and harmful content.

After an investigation, Ofcom found that a song broadcast on the radio station included hate speech, which could have resulted in serious risk of harm and caused unjustified offence to audiences.

On 1st September 2016 at 00:05, Kanshi Radio broadcast song “Pinky Pinky” in Punjabi, which lasted approximately 11 minutes. The lyrics contained a number of aggressively pejorative references to the Muslim community, and Muslim women in particular.

In a decision earlier, Ofcom’s Executive found that the Song constituted hate speech and breached Rules 2.1, 2.3, 3.2 and 3.3 of the Code.
