Kamlesh Purohit has been appointed Assistant Editor at BBC Radio Leicester.

Purohit’s association with BBC Radio Leicester began back in 1986, when he started helping out behind the scenes of the daily Asian programme. Within a couple of years, he had become a presenter in great demand on the station’s rapidly growing Asian output.

In 1996, Radio Leicester’s Asian programming strand broke away from its parent station to form a new 24-hour radio station called BBC Asian Network. As a key member of the management team, Kamlesh played an important role in helping establish new programmes, the Newsroom and Sports service.

Over the years, Kamlesh has presented TV news on BBC East Midlands Today, sport on BBC Asian Network, and reported on cricket from around the world for BBC Five Live, BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service. He is the first British Asian to have both produced and commentated for Test Match Special. His latest role has been as Planning News Editor in the BBC’s new multimedia Newsgathering operation at New Broadcasting House – and he has continued to present a show on BBC Radio Leicester every Sunday evening from 6pm.

Coming back to a full-time role at BBC Radio Leicester completes a very exciting journey for Kamlesh. He says, “I’ve been lucky enough to have worked in many parts of the BBC – News, Sport, Five Live, World Service, regional television. But they say home is where the heart is – and coming back to the station where I started my BBC career, a station I grew up listening to as a child, completes a very exciting journey for me. To be Assistant Editor at the country’s first BBC local radio station, working with such a fantastic team, is a dream come true.”

The Editor of BBC Radio Leicester, Jane Hill, says, “I’m thrilled that Kamlesh is joining us as Assistant Editor. I’m looking forward to benefitting from his huge experience within the BBC.”
