John Abraham 1 340x

After ‘Sarbjit'(2016), a biopic based on the life of Captain Hawa Singh is set to go to floors and John Abraham has been roped in as a potential to depict the wrestling lord on the silver screen.

Hawa Singh earned his first big win at the age of 23. He holds the record for 11 consecutive championship wins from 1961 to 1972, which has never been beaten. Although he was unable to partake in the Asian Games in Jakarta due to border conflicts with China, Singh was able to represent India in 1966 and 1970 in Bangkok, winning two consecutive gold medals. He was then involved in the biggest controversies of boxing history when his Iranian opponent, Bura, was handed the title in a fight due to an error on the part of the referee.

Singh passed away on 13th August 2000, leaving behind his legacy in the form of his boxing club, Bhiwani Boxing Club, which gave India some of it’s best players; Jitender Kumar, Akhil Kumar and Vijender Singh who all took part in the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Sam Fernandez, former Chief Operating Officer of Vidhu Vinod Chopra has now bought the rights to Hawa Singh’s story and intends on produce the film with a partner. According to Pinkvilla, asource informed a popular daily, The makers haven۪t approached Vijender [Singh] yet but will if needed. They plan to shoot in Delhi, Vaishnodevi, Haryana, including his village Umarvas, and Thailand. They will also use actual boxers, will fly them down from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries. This is not the story of an underdog but a champ who was never defeated in the ring but lost to politics, with a love story woven in.۝

Fernandez was able to confirm the news saying, Yes, I am making a biopic on Hawa Singh.”

Although John clarified he had not yet signed the movie, he was nonetheless excited by the prospect of this new venture.ʉWe are both six-feet-one and weigh 94 kgs. His son, Sanjay Singh, daughter-in-law and two grand kids came to see me. I۪ve not signed it yet but the family, Sam and I are all very excited about this project.۝
