International Women’s Day: Successful wives of B-town

On International Women’s Day, it’s usual to think about the many women who are doing their own thing towards their own identity in the world of Bollywood. However, what about those wives who are married to superstar husbands but who are also carving their own niche? In a way, these women share their husbands with a very many other people around the world but they also do well in their own professions as well as being dedicated mothers and daughters-in-law too. BizAsia is taking a look at just five of these such women – even though there are so many more – who exist in Bollywood today.

Despite being the wife of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, this lady is very much standing on her own two feet. Gauri has co-produced many movies and she is also co-owner of Red Chillies Entertainment and also Kolkata Knight Riders with hubby dearest. Gauri has also collaborated with Sussanne Roshan for some designer furniture projects.

Married to B-town’s Greek God, Hrithik Roshan, Sussanne is a very successful interior designer. Sussanne owns an interior design boutique in Mumbai called, ‘House of Design’. Her second store is also now open called ‘The Charcoal Project’ and she is known to have many celebrities on her client list.

Kiran Rao

Much before tying the knot with actor Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao had taken her first steps behind the camera in Bollywood. Having had a extra part in ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ (2001), Rao has been assistant director to none other than Ashutosh Gowariker. She made her own debut as director with ‘Dhobi Ghat’ (2010) which starred Khan.

Twinkle Khanna

Twinkle Khanna is, first and foremost, one of B-town’s talented star-daughters. However, today, she’s married to Khiladi Akshay Kumar and has two children with him. After marriage, Khanna bowed out of acting and opened her own interior design business, ‘The White Window’ in Mumbai. Similarly to Roshan, Khanna also boasts some well-known personalities as her clients.

She has a successful modelling career behind her but this ex Miss India is definitely not just a pretty face. Mehr, like many other star wives, is also co-producer of many movies and she is also co-owner of her husband, Arjun Rampal’s, production house ‘Chasing Ganesha’.

Her designs remain popular for red carpet events and she also designed the jewellery for 2007’s ‘Om Shanti Om’, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in her debut role.

Bhavna Pandey is a��restaurateur��having changed careers after marriage from being an air stewardess. Pandey was also a VJ for a popular music channel. Pandey, along with her husband Chunky, host stage shows across the sub-continent with their company, ‘Bollywood Electric’. Pandey is also manager of designer stores.

The very stylish Farhan Akhtar’s better half is a stylish lady herself. Adhuna is one of the most well-known hairstylists in India. She is also presenter of a reality TV show on Discovery TLC. Having qualified in Washington, Adhuna is best known for her styling techniques in both ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ (2001) and ‘Lakhsya’ (2004) – both directed by hubby dearest.
