Indian Republic Day: Actors who played Army Men multiple times

Sunny Deol, Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff and Salman Khan have all had the chance to play the role of an army man at some point in their careers. For some actors these roles have helped to take their careers to great heights and they have created iconic films.

On the 26th January, many Indians will gather together to celebrate the Indian Republic Day with pride. To mark this day BizAsiaLive.com will look at five actors who have enacted the part of an army man not once but various times.

Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan’s career began from the television drama ‘Fauji’ in 1989. The drama based on the experiences of army cadets saw Khan playing the role of Abhimanyu Rai. The drama became very popular and Khan was liked very much for his performance.

In 1996 he was seen in a small role in the film titled ‘Army’ as Major Arjun Singh. Luckily he was given a chance to play an army man once again and one we would all love.

‘Main Hoon Na’ (2004) saw Khan play the role of Major Ram Sharma who followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the army. Ram was good hearted and a lovable human being, as for an army man he was the best there could be.

Then a few years later Khan returned in ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ (2012) as Major Samar Anand. He was of a serious nature but very cool. At first his character dreads the thought of joining the army but after certain incidents in his life he becomes fearless and because of this he is known for his bravery.

Akshay Kumar
Kumar has played the role of an army man a number of times but each time we loved him more.

In 1993 he starred in the action drama ‘Sainik’ as Lieutenant Suraj Dutt. Sadly the film didn’t do too well at the box office but that didn’t deter Kumar from doing another role like this in the future.

Later Kumar was seen in the multi starrer film ‘Ab Tumhare Hawale Waatan Saathiyo’ (2004). His character was Major Rajeev Singh who ends up having to leave for duty on his wedding day leaving his newly wedded wife to wait for him wondering when he will return.

A decade later Kumar came back in Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty’ (2014). He was appreciated by the audience and fans of Kumar loved his portrayal of an army man.

Suniel Shetty
‘Border’ (1997) saw many actors play some fantastic roles and one of them was played by Shetty. He was the passionate Captain Bhairon Singh whose love for his country resembled that of the love between a mother and child. Shetty was able to convey his character’s feelings really well, his patriotism showed throughout the film.

In ‘LOC Kargil’ (2003) Shetty played the role of Sanjay Kumar who had a very emotional side to him. His fellow colleagues were his friends and the pain of losing them was something that he couldn’t hide.

In 2014 Shetty made a special appearance in the film ‘Jai Ho’ as Captain Arjun, the soldier who helps his ex colleague in the moment of need.

Vidyut Jammwal
Born into an army family it is no surprise that Jammwal would play an army man and suit the role so well. ‘Commando: A One Man Army’ (2012) saw him play the role of Captain Karanvir Singh Dongra. The film may have had mixed reviews but Jammwal was applauded for his incredible action scenes.

Recently he was seen in ‘Baadshaho’ (2017) as the cunning Major Seher Singh. His character was smart and very confident in his abilities.

Ajay Devgn
‘Major Saab’ (1998) saw Devgn as Virendra Pratap Singh who does all he can to escape from the army. Virendra isn’t serious about being in the army and tries to escape however he fails every time. As time passes he becomes serious about his role in the army and transforms from a careless man to a man of discipline.

Colonel Ranvir Singh Ranawat was the character he played in ‘Zameen’ (2003). His character was very sincere about his duty and hated mistakes.

Another film Devgn was seen in was ‘Tango Charlie’ (2005) which saw him alongside Bobby Deol.
