India ratings: Sony TV touches 8-year high

Sony Entertainment Television Asia has earned itself the bronze prize by raking in a huge audience for the telecast of its huge blockbuster acquisition, ‘3 Idiots’.

As reported previously on BizAsia.co.uk, the movie garnered a TVR of 10.9, the biggest rating for any movie shown on Indian television. Overall, the channel scored with a massive 270 GRPs, the biggest for the channel for eight years.

‘Pavitra Rishta’ shown on ZEE TV did well too and delivered a 5.7 TVR. Sony TV’s flagship show ‘CID’ fetched an average TVR of 3.6 for the week (2.6 TVR in the trailing week), garnering 84 GRPs, or 31 per cent of Sony TV’s week’s tally.

“It (270 GRPs) is an eight-year high for Sony. The best part is that our six prime time shows have grown. The shows have rallied around the big event of 3 Idiots,” says Sony Entertainment Television business head Ajit Thakur.

It remains to be seen whether Sony TV can hold on to the number three position next week and sustain its newly found audience.

Meanwhile, Hindi market leader Star Plus witnessed a growth of 42 GRPs since last week to 365 GRPs. Second in leaders race was Colors, which saw a drop of 23 GRPs-from the previous week to 289 GRPs. ZEE TV slipped to the fourth position but its GRPs remained stable at 227, according to TAM data.

SAB TV remained ahead of Imagine, with 89 GRPs compared to Imagine’s 74 GRPs.

Meanwhile, locally, Sony TV UK announced the ‘3 Idiots’ competition winner as Pawandeep Singh from West Drayon, West London. He won the chair (pictured below). The 10 runners up will each win a ‘3 Idiots’/Sony TV goody bag with CDs, posters and other surprises.
