India orders OTT platforms to remove Pakistan-origin content

The Indian government has issued an official advisory directing OTT platforms, media streaming services, and digital intermediaries to cease hosting content originating from Pakistan.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the notice on Thursday, citing national security concerns following recent terror-related incidents.

The advisory refers to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, particularly provisions that require publishers to exercise caution regarding content that may affect India’s sovereignty, integrity, and public order, or that could impact relations with foreign states.

The directive follows the 22nd April Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 tourists were killed.

Under the advisory, platforms are instructed to remove all forms of digital content—including films, series, music, and podcasts—linked to Pakistani entities. This applies to both subscription-based and free content.
