In Video: British Asian footballer Yan Dhanda aims to beat racism

Birmingham-born footballer Yan Dhanda has been speaking about his drive to inspire the next generation of British Asian footballers.

Dhanda has represented England at under-16 and under-17 level, in 2013 he left West Brom’s youth setup to join Liverpool.

The winger has since moved to Swansea at the beginning of last season in search of senior football.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Dhanda said: “I’m super proud to be where I’m from and where my family originate from and I think I’d be stupid not to be.

“I’m in a position where I could be one of the first players with Indian ethnicity to go on and achieve great things and that excites me.

“I’d never hide the fact that I’m Indian or [not celebrate the fact] that there are not other Indian players out there, because I am proud of who I am. I just love playing football and feel my background helps me.”

“I never really thought of myself as a role model because I am still young and I’ve still got a lot to do,” Dhanda added.
