Homi Adajania on ‘Fakir of Venice’
About a decade ago, Homi Adajania was approached for the rights of a concept he had written about in a magazine. The concept soon materialised into the film ‘The Fakir of Venice’. Due to a legal matter, the film has not released yet but Adajania recently reminisced how it came about.
Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Adajania said, “Anand Surapur (the director) read my ‘fakir’ article in a magazine and called me up saying they wanted to turn it into a film. I wasn’t making films at the time but I wanted to go to Peru. I gave them the rights in return for the amount I needed to get to South America… Later I heard Fakir of Venice had been shown at some film festival in Los Angeles but then nothing more. For some reason, I wasn’t shown the film for years and never really asked to see it. I saw it for the first time 10 days ago. It has been dramatised for screen but is based on some of the stuff that actually happened.”
Starring Farhan Akhtar, ‘Fakir of Venice’ is now scheduled to release at some point this year.
On the delay of the film, Adajania expressed, “When the director called to say he was finally releasing it, I asked what are you releasing it as… A period film? But I must admit, when I saw it, I was pleasantly surprised that it doesn’t look dated at all. In terms of the story, it can be placed in any time-frame, really.”
The black comedy also stars Annu Kapoor.
