Hamza Choudhury set to make history as first Premier League player to represent Bangladesh

Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury has officially had his switch of international allegiance to Bangladesh approved by FIFA, paving the way for him to make history as the first Premier League player to represent the Bengal Tigers.

The 27-year-old Foxes academy graduate, born in Loughborough, previously made seven appearances for England’s Under-21 team but qualifies for Bangladesh through his ancestry. With Bangladesh currently ranked 185th in FIFA’s world rankings, Choudhury’s inclusion is expected to bring valuable experience and international recognition to the squad.

Choudhury, who played a key role in Leicester City’s FA Cup-winning campaign in 2021, is known for his tenacity in midfield. His decision to represent Bangladesh marks a significant moment for the country’s football scene and is likely to inspire young footballers of Bangladeshi origin around the world.

“We are pleased to inform that Hamza Dewan Choudhury has been cleared to play for Bangladesh,” said the Bangladesh Football Federation.

“This decision was made by the Player’s Status Chamber of the Football Tribunal of FIFA.”

Choudhury added: “I’m so happy everything is over the line and I can’t wait to be playing for Bangladesh.”
