Gujarat becomes latest state to ban ‘Padmavati’

The Rajput community and the Karni Sena has been protesting against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ for a number of months. BizAsiaLive.com has learnt that the state of Gujarat has become the latest to ban the film.

Rajasthan, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh have already put a ban in place. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, said, according to Pune Mirror, “The film stands banned in Gujarat. We will not release it till the controversy over the film is sorted”.

He added, “Padmavati has hurt the sentiments of Rajputs in the state. As the state government, it is our duty to stand by the people in our state. We are having elections in Gujarat and we cannot afford to have any law and order issues”.

The Rajput community and political leaders have deemed the film as distorting facts. The film is also currently in the queue and yet to be viewed by the CBFC.
