Pakistani broadcaster Geo UK has told BizAsia.co.uk that its recent ICC Twenty20 cricket coverage has proven to be a “brilliant success story for the channel”.

As reported earlier this week, entertainment TV channels in India have suffered a blow after viewers opted to watch India and Pakistan’s triumph performance in the Twenty20 series on sport channels like ESPN and STAR Cricket.

In the UK, the series was shared between main broadcaster Sky Sports (English) and Geo UK (Urdu). Sky Sports remained neutral on the outcome of the tournament. When BizAsia.co.uk asked Sky Sports about the response it gained from the first ever World Twenty20, it refused to comment on what they called “fairly commercially sensitive information.”

Meanwhile, Geo UK, which has witnessed a huge response from advertisers and viewers during the series was quick to comment, “All I can say Twenty20 turned out to be brilliant success story for the channel. We had such a superb response from our valued advertisers and esteem viewers that its hard to express in words. Future acquisitions can’t comment at this stage! But of course Geo TV thrives to provide its viewers with only premium content and nothing below.”

Geo UK is also gearing to launch its news channel in the coming months. As well as that, the broadcaster also plans to encrypt its main service, along with its youth channel Aag.
