Geo UK denies encryption rumours

Popular Pakistani broadcaster Geo UK has confirmed to BizAsia.co.uk that it has no plans yet to encrypt its main channel on Sky Digital, contrary to today’s rumours.

Geo UK has been available free on satellite since it launched in March 2005. There has been speculation over its encryption plans after Geo UK begun broadcasting promotions over the weekend asking viewers what it would pay for a bundle consisting of Geo UK and its youth channel Aag, along with its forthcoming news service.

BizAsia.co.uk has been inundated with emails from viewers wanting to know what the latest was. Geo UK said the promo is a mere marketing strategy being conducted by an external company. The spokesman further added that it has no intentions of encrypting the Geo channels yet but a review was underway. He said that the channels will remain free-to-air for at least another three months before any concrete decision is made. Geo UK also ruled out any rumours that it was joining an existing TV bouquet of channels.
