Geo TV launch details emerge

Pakistani infotainment broadcaster Geo TV launched last week in the UK with a US feed and its not long before the localised feed goes live.

Geo TV, which launched unexpectedly on the Sky EPG last Wednesday had been running promos and adverts from the US and programming from Dubai at scattered times. According to the website IndianTelevision, the channel will be starting its UK feed soon. It is currently showing “test transmission” on its Sky EPG 838.

Currently free-to-air, the channel will be priced as a standalone channel. “As a standalone channel in the US, it is priced at $15 per subscriber per month, while the target is to price the channel at ?15 in the UK when it makes an entry there.”

In the UK, programming would be on the lines of the US feed. The effort will be to have localised content to cater to the South Asian viewers. The channel would also beam dramas, among other entertainment fare.

Geo TV airs programmes partly in Urdu and in English in the USA and has sizeable portion of local content The channel forayed into the Middle-East last year and airs there as a free-to-air channel on the Pehla bouquet.

Geo TV will also be turning its flagship channel into a news-only channel, to make way for Geo TV-Entertainment, which will primarily screen entertainment shows, which are currently aired on Geo TV. The new channel will debut in Pakistan, as well as its other Aag TV channel.
