Geo News & Dunya News complaints upheld by Ofcom

Ofcom has upheld two separate complaints against Pakistani broadcasters, Geo News and Dunya News for an incident in April 2022.

The complaints by Mr Shayan Ali were upheld, in which a programme on Geo News reported on an incident involving the complainant outside the headquarters of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) in London, during which it was alleged that he had used “filthy language” towards Mr Nawaz Sharif, a former Prime Minister of Pakistan, and had injured a security guard. Mr Ali complained that he was treated unjustly or unfairly because the allegations made about him in the programme were false.

Similarly, Dunya News reported on the same incident, in which it alleged Mr Ali “acting unmannerly tried to attack” Mr Nawaz Sharif, a former Prime Minister of Pakistan, and that Mr Ali had injured a security guard by throwing his phone.

Mr Ali complained that he was treated unjustly or unfairly because the allegations made about him in the programme were false, and that the broadcaster had not taken a “statement” from him before the programme was broadcast.

Ofcom found that the broadcaster did not take reasonable care to satisfy itself that material facts had not been presented, disregarded, or omitted in a way that was unfair to Mr Ali. Also, the broadcaster had not demonstrated that it had given him a timely and appropriate opportunity to respond to the significant allegation about his conduct made in the programme. This resulted in Mr Ali being treated unfairly in the programme as broadcast.
