Geo in hot water for hurting religious sentiments

Geo Network is once again in the news for the wrong reasons after controversial content was aired on its morning show ��Utho Jago Pakistan�۪ hosted by Shaista Lodhi.

The broadcaster has launched an inquiry against the breakfast show over the inadvertent mistake on Wednesday’s show. Lodhi apologized over the inadvertent mistake in the programme that caused an uproar in various sections of the society.

The episode (clip below) in question aired a do over of the wedding rituals of prominent actress Veena Malik and her husband Asad Khattak. During one such ritual, a Qawali was performed live in the background and together with the visuals, it allegedly appeared objectionable and potentially insulting.

According to her statement aired today, the remorseful host said that she along with the entire team feels sorry and tenders an apology for the circumstances that were triggered inadvertently due to the content of the program broadcast yesterday.

Dr Shaista said that she seeks forgiveness from the Almighty Allah over an unintended gaffe that hurt the sentiments of the people.

Meanwhile, PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) has received more than 5,000 public complaints against the programme of the channel through PEMRA Complaints Call Centre and website. The complaints are being referred to the Council of Complaints in the light of Section 26 of PEMRA Act 2007, for deciding the matter on emergent basis within a week.
