Fox’s takeover of Sky to be examined by Ofcom

Culture Secretary, Karen Bradley has confirmed that she is referring the 21st Century Fox bid to takeover Sky, to Ofcom.

The decision has been made to ensure that Rupert Murdoch does not have too much control of news output in the UK. Furthermore, Ofcom will look into whether the Murdoch family is “fit and proper” to run Sky in the UK following the controversial phone-hacking scandal.

Media Guardian reports that the two public interest issues that will be looked into will be 1. Plurality and concentration of Murdoch’s control in the UK media 2. Editorial standards – To ensure Murdoch is committed to required editorial standards, such as accuracy and impartial news coverage.

Ofcom will have over a month to respond back to Bradley about the points above.
