Forward look: Most anticipated films scheduled for 2022 releases

Cinemas across the world were suddenly forced to close in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, causing losses of more than Rs. 15,000 crore (approx. £1.6bn) to the Bollywood industry. With life stuttering back to the new normality in 2021, some movies opted for direct digital releases whilst others postponed their movies until the situation had settled down a bit more. With the new year nearly upon us, 2022 will be a critical year for Bollywood as these big movies will finally see the light of the day.

BizAsiaLive.com looks forward to some of the most anticipated Hindi films of 2022.

‘RRR’ (Was scheduled for 7th January 2022 but postponed)
One of the most awaited movies worldwide, ‘RRR’ stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan and Alia Bhatt in lead roles. The movie is a fictional account of two Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao), who fought against the British Raj and Nizaam of Hyderabad respectively. Made on a massive budget of Rs 400 crore, ‘RRR’ is expected hit the big screens worldwide on 7th January 2022.

‘Prithviraj’ (21st January 2022)
Backed by Yash Raj Films, ‘Prithviraj’ is one of the most expensive Bollywood movies of 2021. The period drama stars Akshay Kumar in the lead role of ruler Prithviraj Chauhan. Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar also makes her Bollywood debut in this film, playing Chauhan’s love interest and beloved wife Sanyogita. The movie is scheduled for 21st January 2022 release.

‘Bachchan Pandey’ (4th March 2022)
Another film starring the Khiladi Kumar, this time as he reunites with Farhad Samji for this action-comedy movie. Despite rumours that it is a remake of the Tamil movie ‘Jigarthanda’ (2014), makers are claiming it to be an original script. Starring Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi, and Pankaj Tripathi, ‘Bachchan Pandey’ will release on 4th March 2022.

‘Shamshera’ (18th March 2022)
Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Vaani Kapoor, and Sanjay Dutt, the period drama has been delayed multiple times. The movie is set in the 1800s and tells the story of a dacoit tribe fighting against the British. Karan Malhotra, who has previously directed movies like ‘Agneepath’ (2012) and ‘Brothers’ (2015) is helming the project. ‘Shamshera’ will release on 18th March 2022.

‘KGF Chapter 2’ (14th April 2022)
One of the biggest releases of 2022, it is a sequel to the 2018 movie ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’. The expectations are huge from this action thriller as the first movie emerged as a huge hit and garnered an unbelievable response from the viewers. The movie will release on 14th April 2022, in Kannada along with the dubbed versions of Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam languages.

‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ (14th April 2022)
Starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is an official Hindi remake of the Tom Hanks cult classic ‘Forrest Gump’ (1994). It was initially scheduled for Christmas 2021 release but got delayed due to the pandemic. Aamir Khan starrer will release in cinemas on 14th April 2022, clashing with the eagerly anticipated ‘KGF Chapter 2’.

‘Maidaan’ (3rd June 2022)
Starring Ajay Devgn and Priyamani, ‘Maidaan’ will arrive in theatres on 3rd June 2022. Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, ‘Maidaan’ is a biographical sports drama movie starring Devgn in the role of Syed Abdul Rahim, who served as a coach and manager of the Indian football team in the 1950s.

‘Cirkus’ (15th July 2022)
After the success of ‘Simmba’ (2018), Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh have collaborated on a comedy titled ‘Cirkus’. The movie is an official adaptation of the 1982 movie ‘Angoor’ which was based on William Shakespeare’s play The Comedy of Errors. ‘Cirkus’ also stars Pooja Hegde, Varun Sharma, Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra among others. It will hit the theatres on 15th July 2022.

‘Adipurush’ (11th August 2022)
After the success of ‘Tanhaji’ (2020), director Om Raut is working on a historical movie based on the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages, the movie stars Prabhas as Rama, Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh, Kriti Sanon as Sita and Sunny Singh as Lakshmana. ‘Adipurush’ will hit the big screens on 11th August 2022.

‘Pathan’ (tbc)
King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan will return to silver screens after a hiatus of three years. His next, tentatively titled Pathan, is an action-thriller and also stars John Abraham and Deepika Padukone. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the release date of ‘Pathan’ is still unknown but is rumoured to release around Diwali in 2022.

These releases are all expected for cinema releases but it remains to be seen whether their release dates change or they take the digital route. Either way, we are looking forward to these and many more in the coming year.
