Five timeless shows that British Asians will always love
British Asian representation on national television has evolved through bold storytelling, cultural humour, and heartfelt drama.
These five shows not only entertained but helped define the British Asian experience for generations. Here’s a look at five enduring classics that left a lasting legacy:
‘Network East’ (BBC Two, 1987–2003) One of the BBC’s earliest lifestyle and entertainment programmes for British Asians, Network East featured music, interviews, and cultural segments. With presenters like Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Sonia Deol, it celebrated South Asian talent and identity during a pivotal era of multicultural broadcasting.

‘Goodness Gracious Me’ (BBC Two, 1998–2001) A trailblazing sketch comedy that turned stereotypes on their head, ‘Goodness Gracious Me’ brought British Asian humour into the mainstream. With iconic sketches like “Going for an English,” the show starred Sanjeev Bhaskar, Meera Syal, Kulvinder Ghir, and Nina Wadia, and became a cultural touchstone for British Asians.
‘The Kumars at No. 42’ (BBC One, 2001–2006) This award-winning hybrid of sitcom and chat show followed a British Indian family who hosted celebrities in their suburban home. Led by Sanjeev Bhaskar, the show cleverly blended comedy with cultural commentary, earning international acclaim and an International Emmy.
‘Bollywood or Bust’ (BBC Two, early 1990s) Produced by the BBC Asian Programmes Unit at Pebble Mill, ‘Bollywood or Bust’ was a vibrant series that captured the glamour and grit of Bollywood culture through a British lens. It was hosted by Mo Dutta and Sanjeev Bhaskar.

‘Mutz Cutz’ (ZEE Music, 2002–2005) Following the success of ‘Sorted’, presenter Murtz returned to ZEE Music with ‘Mutz Cutz’, a studio-based show that became a cult favourite among British Asian families. The programme featured viewer video requests, shout-outs, and email messages, all delivered with Murtz’s signature charm and energy. It was a warm, interactive format that connected communities across the UK and Europe, earning him the title of ZEE Muzic’s UK brand ambassador.
