BBC Five Live’s controller Bob Shennan has been confirmed as the new controller at the BBC Asian Network.
In an internal memo to all involved it was stated that the current Station Manager Vijay Sharma will continue to run the network on a day-to-day basis with the help of Ishfaq Ahmed and Mike Curtis. They will have the same relationship that Andy Parfitt, as Controller Radio 1, has with 1Xtra, Lesley Douglas as CR2 has with 6 Music and Mark Damazer as CR4 has with BBC 7. Bob on the other has been appointed the new position after recommendations made by Tim Gardam in his report to the DCMS on the corporation’s digital networks.
In a note by BBC Radio & Music Director Jenny Abramsky said: “Bob, Vijay and I all agreed that it would be to the benefit of both stations if we built on the relationship which they have developed over the past couple of years. The change means the Asian Network will be represented by a controller at the Radio & Music top table.”
